Maybe. It depends how they wired the Blacktops. To get singles and humbuckers to play nicely together, you need to use 500k pots with a shunt resistor from the single coil to ground in order to adjust the impedance of the single to match the humbucker.

The witches hat knobs were cool but I had decided that I would flip the controls so it was like my traditional Tele. To do this I had to do some mods to the control cavity so that the blade switch would fit correctly, minor work with a Dremel and a cutting bit. My blacktop tele had audio pots. So I don't think your "on all of a sudden" problem is due to a linear pot, though that is worth checking when you get the guitar taken apart. In summary, I would say linear pots have more of a range from 5-10 at the expense of less of a range from 0 - 5.

A Filter'tron is much narrower than a PAF, so the coils are closer together. The pole pieces are also 1/16" closer together than a traditional humbucker. Early Gretsch pickups were also not soldered in place. The hook-up wire was simply clipped to the pickup.

The only difference between a tone pot and a volume pot is whether there is a capacitor attached. Since a potentiometer is a resistor, putting a cap between the pot and ground turns it into an EQ. Because we can vary the amount of resistance by turning the pot up or down, we can choose how much high-end frequency content gets rolled off.
